PM Vishwakarma Yojana: Support for Traditional Artisans & Craftspeople

India's traditional artisans — carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, tailors and many more — are the backbone of local economies, yet they have long struggled to access modern tools, formal skills and affordable credit. The PM Vishwakarma Yojana, launched in September 2023, is a comprehensive scheme designed to change that. Here's how it works.

What is PM Vishwakarma?

PM Vishwakarma provides end-to-end support to artisans and craftspeople who work with their hands and tools. It combines recognition, skill development, financial incentives and credit into a single programme run by the Ministry of MSME. Read the structured overview on our PM Vishwakarma scheme page.

The 18 covered trades

The scheme covers 18 traditional trades, including:

Trade group Examples
Wood & metal Carpenter, blacksmith, goldsmith, armourer, lock-smith
Construction Mason (rajmistri), sculptor / stone carver
Household & tools Potter, cobbler / footwear artisan, barber, washerman, tailor
Craft & utility Boat maker, basket / mat / broom maker, doll & toy maker, garland maker, fishing-net maker, hammer & tool-kit maker

If your craft falls within these categories and you work on an unorganised, self-employed basis, you may be eligible.

Who is eligible?

  • Artisans and craftspeople engaged in one of the 18 notified trades.
  • At least 18 years old and self-employed in the unorganised sector.
  • One member per family is eligible.
  • Applicants should not have taken similar credit-based government loans in recent years (as specified in the guidelines).

Government employees and their families are excluded.

How to register

  1. Visit a Common Service Centre (CSC) with your Aadhaar and bank details.
  2. Complete biometric registration through the CSC operator.
  3. Your application is verified at the Gram Panchayat / Urban Local Body level, followed by district and screening-committee approval.
  4. Once approved, download your PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card.
  5. Enrol for skill training, claim the toolkit incentive, and apply for the credit support.

Building a sustainable livelihood

PM Vishwakarma pairs naturally with other support. Once trained and equipped, artisans can scale up using a MUDRA loan or, for larger units, the PMEGP credit-linked subsidy. Upskilling further through the Skill India Mission can open new markets.
